Denby Article Questions

Published by robynnicoleee under Uncategorized

2. The male villin is described more through his actions than his looks, like the girl. He’s emphasizing on the male’s supidity and attention craving actions, while he describes how people are intimidated of the woman because of her beauty.

3. I detect change in tone in the third paragraph where Denby starts to show qualifiers that lead into his argument in the next paragraphs. His first three are filled with rhetorical strategies like hyperboles and metaphors, then he jumps into his argument.

4. The break between the third and fourth paragraph is there because Denby is switching from his introduction and examples of his topic to his actual argument.

5. He answers the rhetorical questions by showing examples from movies that relate to real life today, but also leaves room for qualifiers.

6. He used his expertise and established his ethos by referring to an wide range of movies that appealed to his topic. Some may have had different storylines, but they all asupported his argument.

7.Denby’s central argument is that teen movies have established an ideal standard for high school students. He also argues that stereotypical popular students won;t succeed, while the geeks of the school will end up with top- of – the line jobs.

9. He ties the theory to the teen movies by making it seem that the nerd will catch the attention of the most popular person in school, making it an over happily ever after (cinderella).

10. Denby supports his argument that the shooters didn’t learn that “geeks rule” by showing examples of movies and storylines where the geek ended up on top and highly successful.

Dumb Article

Published by robynnicoleee under Uncategorized

The main argument made in the article “How dumb can we get”, by Susan Jacoby, is that Americans are being anti-rational and anti-intellectual, and they seem to be proud of it. When she states, “Americans are in serious intellectual trouble- in danger of losing our hard-won cultural capital to a virulent mixture of anti-intellectualism, anti-rationalism and low expectations”, she is suggesting that with America’s lack of want for intellectualism and rationalism, the pleasures and freedoms that we fought for in the past might be lost. In conclusion, Jacoby believes that our lack for wanting to become smarter and learn is harmful to the nation, and it will end up having a negative effect.

Personally, I think Jacoby is right because our country won’t be able to prosper without people being intellectual. More specifically, I agree with Jacoby completely when she says that television ishelping the anti-intellecual problem. For example, many of the shows watched on television by children have to do with cartoon characters running around and doing irrotic things. This is no way helps those children become intellegent. When i was younger, I used to sit down with my parents and older brother and read a book for entertainment- not just turn straight to the tv. Some people, including parents, might disagree abd say that television can be educational, and help teach kids the basic skills they need. I maintain that generally television does not educationally help the anti-intellectual problem, but watching a movie or tv show with moderation is fine. Therefore, I conclude that the reason the levels of intellectualism and rationalism are dropping is somewhat related to technogology and entertainment, and it can’t be ignored any longer.

JFK ap squared

Published by robynnicoleee under Uncategorized

On Friday, January 20, 1961, John F. Kennedy gave his inaugural address. The night before, there was an atrocious storm, and the inauguration was deliberated on being cancelled, but that thought was overruled. In his speech, Kennedy talked about the current asperities of the nation and what he would do to fix them. The purpose of his speech was to help everyone in America, or anyone else who cared, see how the country was taking a turn for the bad, and how everything the fathers of our country fought for was being forgotten. Then show how he can make the country and the world a better place with help and support. He was addressing “the citizens of America and the world”, the allies and foes of the United States, and anyone who wanted to help change the future in a positive way. His address takes on the overall persona of proving that great things can be accomplished when the people come together and work on creating love, not animosity. His general aurgument is America can become the remarkable, affluent country that it can be, if everyone puts in an effort to improve. In some parts of his speech, he argues that the current citizens should not forget the ones of the past. The ones that fought so hard for the rights that are being so easily taken advantage of today. He aurgues that America will not ignore other countries that are in predicaments, just because they may have been our foes in the past. An lastly, he aurgues that America needs a to “begin anew”, with the thought of peace and proseperity dominating her mind. He shows that he will do anything in order to ‘lead the land” he loves.
